HOLLYWOOD’S MAGICAL ISLAND-CATALINA
THROUGH THE REMARKABLE EYE of first time film director, Greg Reitman, we get a first hand glimpse of The Magic Isle. While exploring historical, social, and environmental changes, the film captures the mystical splendors, natural beauty and romance of Santa Catalina Island. Using a mix of rare 16mm, archival film and old black and white stills, inter-cut with interviews of islanders, historians and celebrities; the viewer is taken on a journey during America’s golden era. It begins with the acquisition of the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 led by William Wrigley, Jr. He set a course for Catalina’s future in the world of art, sports, music and entertainment that was unmatched in US history even through present day. The film documents architectural achievements, many are first of a kind buildings and innovations that transformed Catalina from a simple island into a modern day state-of-the-art playground. The film highlights many of the individuals including stars of the Big Band Era, Marilyn Monroe, and the island’s role as Hollywood’s secret playground for the stars. The island even played a role in helping to elect a President. We witness the island’s tragedy and heartache – deftly captured in the film with heartfelt interviews and a score that tugs at the emotions. Utilizing interviews with Jean-Michel Cousteau, heirs of the Wrigley family, residents and visitors of the island; we learn of William Wrigley, Jr’s dream of preserving the island’s natural beauty as well as providing a magical place for all to enjoy. The film concludes with Art Good Jazz Trax, Fender’s Catalina Island Blues Festival, and a visual kaleidoscope of modern day Catalina Island as an ecological paradise highlighting the revival of the island as a place of leisure and entertainment.

Durant la pluie, title that hints at the haunting presence of the monsoons, tells the experience of a French photographer, Nicolas Pascarel, who has been working for the last four years on the theme of the Memory in Cambodia. His double look, as man and as photographer, crosses the places and the faces of this country in which the marks of the recent genocide impend like a shadow over the present and the future.
On the 30th anniversary of the entry of red khmers in Phnom Penh, when in the country they finally start speaking about the International Process, Nicolas Pascarel goes back to Cambodia to organise the exhibition of his work at the Institute of French Culture and at Toulsleng, the Museum of the Genocide, better Known as S21, where, between 1975 and 1979, more than twelve thousand people died.
Moving at night into the most secluded parts of the town, together with the volunteers of Krousar Thmey – the NGO that tries to recover the thousands of children living in the streets - or roaming around S21, trying to give a face and a voice to the painful history of the country, the photographer deeply feels the difficulty of his aim.
If you are not in the middle of the conflict and you want to show, at any cost in a single snap, the truth and what has survived the disaster, you will understand how frustrating Nicolas Pascarel’s work, as a photographer, can become.
S21 is the pole around which runs his research. But also the houses occupied by Pol Pot’s guards between 1975 and 1979 are still there, witnesses of the horrors of those years, so as the men and women to which Nicolas Pascarel speaks to, day by day, moving into the surreal province, in the rice-fields still infested with anti-personnel mines, the skeletons of the French colonial villas, the jungle and the Bocor casino, once the biggest in Indochina, that for weeks had been the theatre of a long shoot out between red khmers and Vietnameses, and on the walls you can still see the holes left by the bullets.
This work is the photograph of discouraged people of a country where the 70% of the population is under twenty: where who is too young has not lived the horror of the genocide and cannot believe that all that could ever had happened; where who was there has forgotten; and where today it is difficult to recognize the enemy: Kmher, in fact, means Cambodian.
At school no one speaks about genocide and History is left to the family memory and story, in fact, nearly everybody has lost one or more relatives in those 4 years.
Two million dead people out of six million.
"Where has memory gone here?" this is the question that Nicolas continuously keeps asking.

In the 1990's, Gloria Trevi - known as Mexico's Madonna - was the biggest star in Latin America singing her own songs to packed arenas and fronting TV shows. A few years later she was singing alone in a prison cell, accused of the abduction, corruption and rape of a 12 year old girl. Young Catholic girls from Mexican villages, drawn to Trevi's fame by her manager and pop Svengali Sergio Andrade's "talent school", alleged that, instead of stardom, their fate was imprisonment, torture and sexual slavery. SUPERSTAR ON TRIAL is a chilling parable about pop ambition and the power of celebrity.

Myriam Fuks is a well-known Yiddish-language singer from Brussels. Her mother was a woman who lived in the past, repeating the tales of her horrors in the Holocaust over and over. After her mother's death , Myriam found out that she had lived a lie: Hers was a very different Holocaust. She lived a good life during the war, disguised as a Christian in a small German village.
The film follows Myriam as she sets out to understand her mother’s real story and the meaning of the truth, and ultimately finds reconciliation. It’s a film about myths, their use, and abuse. A victim twice – once in Nazi Germany, and again among her own people, this is about the fight for life, the zest to live.

BLACK COFFEE trace the unique and volatile history of coffee. From its discovery on an ancient Ethiopian hillside to its role as a contemporary elixir, coffee has dominated and molded the economies, politics and social structures of entire countries. Coffee’s history is rife with controversy and paradox. It has been banned as an instigator of revolution, yet lies at the heart of the democratic tradition in Costa Rica.
It has been vilified as a public health hazard, and praised as the boon of artists and thinkers. Its propagation led to the spread of slavery, the subjugation of the Indians, and the destruction of rainforests around the world. Yet, growing, processing, exporting, roasting, brewing and selling coffee provides a livelihood (of sorts) for over 20 million people.
Today, coffee is at the forefront of a swelling global grassroots movement for fair trade and sustainability, and the time has never been more ripe for telling the story of this wildly popular bean.

Their history is known as one of persecution, banishment and extermination. But this is only half of the story. Jewish history has golden ages, thriving communities and legendary kingdoms. It is a story of great men and women - lords and adventurers, scholars and poets, merchant princesses and dreamers. Without the Jews Europe would be a totally different continent. Without them Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment and present time would not have been the same. We tell the unknown history of Europe, the history of the ‘alien’ Jews.

And that is, at the same time, incapable of getting to the bottom of them although quite skilled at making use of them.
Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, a community of UFO enthusiasts has developed in the former Soviet Union. That should make it possible to dig up documentation on the phenomenon there and find historical witnesses similar to those in the USA.

The cynical description used in the American press – a game of blind man’s bluff – fails to convey the seriousness of the events and their potential consequences. More than 20 collisions between American and Soviet submarines, resulting in hundreds of bodies left rotting on the sea-bed, represent only the tip of the iceberg as far as these secret operations are concerned. To this day one question has never been addressed by journalists: what role did submarines of the French and German navies play in the Cold War?

James Dean has long survived his brief 24 years. Born in 1931 and dead by 1955, it is as if he had a destiny, rather than a life. September/October 2005 marked the 50th anniversary of both Dean's fatal automobile accident and the release of the film with which he is forever identified, Rebel Without a Cause. A cinema figure of such iconic and mythic dimensions, it is said of Dean that he didn't just change the way people acted, he changed the way people lived. He was original, he was a natural. Synonymous with adolescent angst, he also redefined the American male ideal, making vulnerable sexy and alienation desirable. Remarkably, there are only three films to his legacy -East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant-crafted with three seminal directors, Elia Kazan and Nicholas Ray and George Stevens. Reality and art are closely linked in Dean and are seamlessly woven in this documentary-his film personae are all misfits, consummate outsiders, characters in search of identity and meaning, who echo the themes of loss and abandonment in his own life experience.

In 1883, the young Cather was plucked from her luxurious home in Virginia and dropped into the vast, tallgrass prairies of Nebraska, an experience that terrified, but exhilarated, her and became the force behind all of her great novels-O Pioneer, The Song of the Lark, My Antonia, Death Comes for the Archbishop and the Pulitzer Prize winning One of Ours. Her life remains mysterious-largely because she destroyed so much of her personal correspondence and insisted upon specific restrictions concerning her work-and seductive-largely because she ignored every cultural obstacle in her path. She was educated and well traveled, she smoked and she talked tough, she did not suffer fools and she often dressed like a man. She has been a great inspiration to women writers and a great hero to women readers, rediscovered in every decade for the past 100 years. This program is filmed in widescreen HD, enhancing the beauty of the endless prairie; giving palpable texture to Cather's writing and bringing the frontier to life-restoring its grandeur, its desolation and this truly American literary genre.

More than 40 years after his death, Hemingway is one of the most widely read, and widely written about, American authors. His distinct style and profound influence are indisputable; his larger-than-life persona is still the stuff of heated debate. As well know in his lifetime as any movie star, Hemingway was a dashing international figure who challenged the notion that writers exist in an ivory tower. There were the battles, the bull fights, the big game, the booze-and he channeled these experiences into stark prose, creating a new form of expression, describing action and emotion in simple, authenic terms. The recent excitement over Cuba's release of their Hemingway collection is unmatched in modern literature. It is the literature, it is the written word and the art of Hemingway's story telling that forms the heart and the freshness of this fil, the point of departure from which Hemingway's life and wrok are uniquely explored.

Bob Dylan gives his only interview in 20 years, participating for the very first time in an exclusive film biography. From his explosive arrival on the downtown NYC scene in 1961-with a raspy voice, pounding guitar and stunning lyrics-through his near-fatal motorcycle accident in Woodstock in 1966, no one had more of an impact and on one changed the landscape of contemporary music more profoundly. Private, almost reclusive, disdainful of customary forms of publicity, Dylan has now agreed to make an appearance in his own story, illuminated in particular by his remarkable five year period. Directed by Martin Scorsese, with an archive of, literally, never before seen footage-from childhood, from those times, some of whom, like Allan Ginsberg, ar long dead, the film is intimate and incomparable.

“Zarathushtra, It Starts With A Z” is about Roxanne, a young Canadian Parsi woman struggling to understand the four thousand year history of her faith, Zoroastrianism. Once the largest faith in the world, today it is largely forgotten, almost a footnote. Shot on location in Toronto, San Jose, Halifax, London, Mumbai and in Iran, the settings are spectacular.
Witness the towers of silence with their mythical funeral practices and the fire temples.
Travel to the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the greatest Persian ruler and perhaps the greatest ruler of all time who rescued the Israelites from Babylonian bondage, restored the Babylonian God Marduk to its holy temple and rebuilt the ravaged Solomon’s Temple.
See the ruins of Persepolis, Passargadae, the Necropolis of ancient Persia. Trace the story to Alexander the Great or the Accursed, depending on your perspective, who almost destroyed an entire faith in one cruel act. It Starts and Ends with a Z.

C.S. Lewis : Beyond Narnia tells the dramatic story of the spiritual journey taken by the author of the beloved series of books for family audiences, The Chronicles of Narnia, also celebrated for his writings on Christianity, including such classics as The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity. Lewis began life as a Christian, became a vocal and committed atheist for most of his youth and early manhood, and then, in his thirties, went through a startling transformation that brought him to full faith in Christ. In this film Lewis, played by Anton Rodgers, looks back with humor and candid emotion on the events that shaped and influenced him. Dramatic recreations, filmed in Lewis’s home - The Kilns, and the Oxford where he lived for most of his life, are woven together with commentary from family, friends, and experts, who provide many fascinating and moving insights. The climax of the film is the wrenching struggle Lewis faced in his early sixties when his faith was shaken to its foundations by the death of his beloved wife, Joy Davidman (played by Diane Venora), after only three years of marriage. With searing honesty he tells of his despair, anger, and ultimate reconciliation with the God in whom he had placed his trust for so many years.

Venice, 29 January 1996, 20:58. A phonecall reaches the operating room of Venice Fire Dept: “we see some smoke coming through the Fenice”. It started like that a long night that will hardly be forgotten by the Venetians.
Of that night, images of men with a heavy uniform, running through the calli, climbing up the roofs. Their silhouettes were standing out on the sea of fire coming out from the theatre walls. Today those shapes have a face. Men that fate brought to face each other in the disaster of the century. Therefore, not a documentary on the history of the Fenice, but a documentary on the story of the lives which that night lived some crucial moments: fear, defeat, difficulty, sympathy, risk. The story goes on through their narration, still actual, intense and exciting. On the background, the city of Venice, which was stunned by the event and unable to react.

At the outset of the American Civil War, a teenager from New Orleans paid a tailor to make a soldier’s uniform. Serving under an alias, Lieutenant Harry Buford was an officer in the battle of First Bull Run, was wounded at Shiloh, and served as a secret agent for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Buford’s real name was Loreta Janeta Velazquez. Born in Cuba and raised in New Orleans, Loreta was brash, quick-witted, and unconventional. Her memoir, published after the war, caused a sensation. She was publicly attacked and discredited by a prominent Southern General, and for over a century, critics have dismissed her as a hoax. But contemporary historians have uncovered evidence indicating she did exist, and that, in fact, she was one of over 400 women documented to have fought in the Civil War. Who was this woman? Why did she choose to fight? And why has she disappeared from history? REBEL is a one hour documentary about a woman, a myth, and the politics of national memory.

In the USA every child learns at school that when Our Lord had put the finishing touches to the continent of America he lifted up one side again, and then "all the raisins and the nuggets rolled into California". And these days people all over the world have the same impression. No country on earth has provided our modern world with more myths than California. Gold fever and Jack Kerouac's "On the Road", Silicon Valley and silicon breast implants, Hell's Angels and Flower Power, fast food and fitness gurus, Haight-Ashbury and Beverly Hills, Harley Davidsons and psycho-therapy, New Age and the rich ghettos of Malibu, the endless lines of cars in Los Angeles and the mountain panorama of Yosemite, the oldest National Park in the world. And one of the most beautiful coastlines on the planet, populated by otters, sea-elephants, condors and pelicans.
The Hollywood dream factory has spread all over the world the California dream of a better life, every day and in every way. And the land has defined the desires of generation after generation - once it meant heading to San Francisco with flowers in your hair, now it's starting a company in your garage and becoming a billionaire in three days. Since the first California gold rush in 1849 droves of adventurers and hopeful dreamers have heeded the famous words of advice "Go West, young man," searching for everything from a fast buck to spiritual enlightenment. And every year over half a million German tourists end up here, humming "Good Vibrations": the Beach Boys' hymn to the west coast. The "anything goes" attitude is seen as a basic aspect of human rights in California, where it really does seem that everything is possible. "California Dreamin'" provides an insight into the myths, with pictures of life in California and interviews with people who live here and those who have come to see if everything they heard about the place is true. A television series about a place where the clocks may be nine hours behind us - but where the future always starts before it does anywhere else.

This film sheds a new light upon the legend of the bandit and popular hero Salvatore Giuliano. While Giuliano dreamt of an independent Sicily, reality was far more complex as post-war was a highly explosive mixture of Mafia, politics and interests. Italian and American secret services, local aristocracy and Mafia all had the same goal: to stop the growth of a democratic peasant movement in Sicily. The gunshots that killed Salvatore Giuliano in 1950 are echoing in many peoples hearts still today.

A Family Secret exposes the phenomenon of "hidden Jews" in today's Poland. Stories of people living in an anti-Semitic society who have learned as adults that although raised Catholic they were actually born Jewish. Since the end of World War II, over twenty thousand cases have been registered in Poland alone of Catholic Polish citizens searching to discover their true identity and Jewish heritage often with devastating consequences. Through the stories of 3 protagonists, one a Catholic priest, we follow each individual's personal struggle to find a balance between two inharmonious worlds.

TEREZIN
Terezin, an isolated stronghold of the XVIII century in the Bohemian countryside, was chosen by the Nazis to become theatre of one of the most cruel deceits of WWII. Created to accommodate the elderly Jews of the Reich, "the gift that Hitler gave to the jews" became the illusion of a thermal residence also for musicians, writers, actors and painters of international reputation.
The tragic reality of the ghetto soon turned into a massive transportation to Auschwitz to reduce the over-crowding.
