The World Congress of History Producers is pleased to present this sneak-peek look into upcoming projects from three of the industry’s most renowned international filmmakers.
Arnie Gelbart will discuss “The Great War”, a remarkable television series to mark the 90th anniversary of Canada and the First World War. This project recruits 300 young descendants of the Canadian soldiers, nurses, and airmen who participated in the war and places them in vivid battle recreations of Vimy Ridge and other epic Canadian Great War battles. Co-produced by Galafilm and CBC.
Steven Markovitz and Jihan El Tahri present “Behind the Rainbow”, the story of South Africa’s predicaments on its path of democratic transformation. With rare access to material that exposes corruption in the country’s leadership, this project examines the coming battle of presidential succession due in 2007 as a turning point on South Africa's bumpy road to democracy. Confirmed broadcasters include ITVS, ARTE, and SABC.
Justin Hardy will bring to the table “The Harlots of Progress”, a period adaptation – not of a novel – but of a set of prints. It is a trawl through 18th century prostitution and an examination of how the decline of a young woman brought about the rise of a young artist, William Hogarth, the best documentary maker of his day. Did the documentarian get too close to his subject? Commissioned Channel 4’s Hamish Mykura.
