It might seem obvious that the past should belong to all of us. But as the commercial libraries of the world increasingly merge or take one another over is there a risk that monopoly organisations will control who has access to what by the prices they charge? Do larger archives make the producers’ job of accessing footage easier? And when you have finally obtained your footage, what kind of clearance hell do producers have to endure to satisfy lawyers and insurers? Is it the case that if it can’t be cleared to the satisfaction of a lawyer, broadcasters will not allow it to be used? What strategies should producers adopt to navigate the minefield of access and clearance?
Three things that producers might take away from this session:
1. An idea of what new and different souces of footage are available that are easier to clear - eg corporate archives.
2. Helps and hints to assist in Errors & Omissions clearance.
3 Tips on working with the larger archives.
